Show Notes

Music Mountain’s primary mission is the performance and teaching of the string quartet literature.

This mission is realized by bringing together professionals, amateurs, adults and children, by developing new audiences and by providing access to the experience of live music.

Now in its ninth decade, Music Mountain continues to bring life to this mission through a wide variety of teaching and performances by artists who come to Music Mountain from all over the world.

The mission is further enhanced through the broadcasts of the Music Mountain Chamber Music concerts, made possible by the generous support of Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, Falls Village, CT. Starting with one station in 1937, these concerts are now heard on over 125 stations nationwide and, through the facilities of the European Broadcast Union, by listeners in over 35 other countries.

Welcome to our 90th Season!

Music Mountain is a magical place. Here, since 1930, world-renowned string quartets and outstanding guest artists have created powerful live performances year after year. The magic is in the music and in the people who make it happen. Our peaceful mountaintop campus and the pristine acoustics of air-conditioned Gordon Hall complete the perfect quartet. Music Mountain’s 90th Anniversary Season is a historic event that we invite you to experience. Please take a look at the many offerings in this brochure and visit the new website we have launched to celebrate our 90th anniversary.

In 2019 our Chamber Music Series continues to feature the Classics front and center — including seven string quartets by Beethoven. On Sunday, June 9th, Peter Serkin opens the season with Beethoven, Brahms and Schoenberg’s Romantic masterpiece, “Transfigured Night.” Don’t miss our thrilling Labor Day Weekend, when the Shanghai Quartet performs back-to-back Saturday and Sunday concerts to celebrate its 30th anniversary at Music Mountain. Check out the Plan Your Visit page to Experience the Foothills of the Berkshires and for suggestions on how to plan a full weekend at Music Mountain.

Our Saturday “Jazz and More” Twilight Series begins on June 15th with a new start time of 5 pm. We are bringing back several of our most successful groups from seasons past. New this season will be two evenings of Cabaret, the first by Steve Ross and the second by Barbara Fasano and Eric Comstock.

Over 100 promising young artists from all over the country will come to Music Mountain this summer to participate in various chamber music workshops. Music Mountain Amateur Week, for adult musicians, is new in 2019. As part of our expanding education program, Music Mountain is proud to provide a first exposure to live chamber music to hundreds of children from Connecticut’s Region 1 schools. In 2018, we introduced an innovative community program, “Painting Music.” This season, on Saturday, August 24th, you’re invited to participate in “Painting Music” once again.

The Music Mountain board of managers and I look forward to meeting you at the Mountain!
